Can You Visit Datong Visa-Free? China’s 240-Hour Transit Policy

Datong is in the permitted area — but your route must qualify

Back to home

What China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy says about visiting Datong, who may qualify, and why your entry port and onward route matter.

The short answer

Datong is included in Shanxi’s permitted activity area for the 240-hour transit visa-free policy. That does not mean every foreign visitor can come visa-free: the policy is for eligible nationalities transiting China to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward itinerary, through a designated port.

As of 20 August 2026, the National Immigration Administration says the policy covers 57 nationalities and 65 designated ports in 24 provincial-level regions. It allows eligible travellers to stay for up to 240 hours (10 days) in the permitted area.

Who may qualify

You must hold an ordinary passport from one of the nationalities on the NIA list, travel onward from China to a country or region different from where you arrived, and have a confirmed ticket with a date and seat. The NIA lists tourism, business, visits and family visits as permitted activities; work, study and news reporting still require the appropriate visa.

Check the NIA’s current nationality list and port rules before booking. Visa-free entry for a single nationality is a different policy and should not be confused with 240-hour transit.

The important Datong route caveat

The NIA’s Shanxi-specific notice names Taiyuan and Datong as permitted activity cities, and Taiyuan Wusu International Airport as the designated Shanxi port. The official sources do not say that arriving in Beijing and then taking a train to Datong is automatically allowed under this policy.

If your plan is to enter China in Beijing, travel to Datong, or leave from a different port, confirm the exact itinerary with the National Immigration Administration or the border inspection authority at your entry port before buying non-refundable tickets. Do not rely on a travel forum or a route summary to decide whether you qualify.

Before you book

Confirm these three items against the current NIA guidance: your passport nationality is eligible; your entry port is on the designated list; and your complete itinerary, including onward departure, stays within the allowed area and 240-hour limit.
